Mr Her, the spokesperson for Tzu Chi, had an American trip and was scheduled to reach Boston on 18 Jun. Since Sean SB, Vict SB and Jennifier SG are all not in Boston, Tony SB told over the overall-in-charge for Mr Her's trip in Boston. We scheduled a gathering among all Tzu Chi Boston volunteers with Mr Her at Stone SB and Yi Fang SG place. I met Vickie SG at Alewife T station for that event, but it was canceled as the flight was canceled due to bad weather.
何日生何主任,慈济基金会发言人兼人文志业发展处主任,近期访美,预定于六月十八日到达波士顿。由于祥达师伯、诗白师伯和淑蓉师姑皆不在波士顿,Tony师伯负起何主任在波士顿的行程。我们安排了一场茶会,让慈济人与何主任在光伟师伯和宜芳师姑家互动。我与金满师姑约好在Alewife地铁站搭她的顺风车,共赴何主任之约。不过,班机由于天气恶劣被取消,茶会也只好跟着被取消。
In the end, I met Mr Her on 19 Jun, in the afternoon when he met with Boston Tzu Ching. It was a very informal chat and I got Dheera along. None of us knew much about Mr Her and hence during the chat, he gave us a short introduction of himself: how his way and concept of life was before and after joining Tzu Chi. He used to lost himself in the fame and glory as he was a professional media executive. He was so well-known that all major political parties in Taiwan wanted him. But he was not happy. To the very extend that his marriage almost came to a disastrous end. Just when he was about to go to Columbia University, one of the best university in Journalism, for his PhD, his wife asked him to return to Tzu Chi. A promise that he made to Master 7 years ago. In the end, he agreed. This decision changed his life and saved his marriage.

After the brief chat with Tzu Ching, I went with the whole gang for dinner at a SG place, after which we proceed to Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association (GBCCA) in Newton, the venue of Mr Her's talk. I am in charge of filming the whole talk since Yi-Hua SB is out of town. My first major project on hand, nervous and excited. Luckily, En-Yu SG (Yi-Hua SB's wife) and Chiung Wen (3-in-1 media group leader) were around. I was slightly sad when Mr Her did not allow me to keep a copy of the whole video-taping. Hence, I did not see how well (or how bad) my skills were.
与慈青短暂的交谈后,我随大伙到一位师姑家吃晚膳,接着到位于牛顿市的大波士顿区中华文化协会。何主任在那有一场对外茶会,而我则因为宜华师伯下了纽约,负起了拍摄整个茶会的责任。这是我成为真善美志工后的第一项重大任务,既紧张又兴奋。好在恩玉师姑(宜华师伯家师姐)和琼雯师姐(真善美干事)在旁协助。美中不足的是,何主任不让慈济人私下保留一份影像。因此我没机会看看我的录影技巧是如何的好(或是如何得差)。Mr Her's talk was very long. But I feel that the initial part is very close to my thinking. In fact, I feel like he was just talking to me.
何主任的谈话很长,不过我很认同他开头讲的几段话,甚至认为何主任是在一对一地与我对话。
He first mentioned that he is a professional, somebody who is recognized as western-oriented by Taiwanese, but not so by Westerners. On the other hand, he is recognized as Chinese-oriented by the Westerners, but not so by Taiwanese. In short, instead of best of both worlds, he is seen as "Jack of all trade but masters of none". But because of this, he found that he has no problem fitting into Tzu Chi. Tzu Chi is the very few, to my knowledge the only one, which can be considered as modernized Buddhism. Where do you find a nun that teaches over the internet, everyday? Where do you find a Buddhist society that has live broadcast of sutra chanting via internet in our branches over 46 countries such that all of us chant the same sutra at the same time? Mr Her, like myself, had no problem adjusting to both the traditional and modern aspect of Tzu Chi.
何主任首先提到的是他是一位专业人士,台湾人认为他象西方人,西方人认为他象台湾人。到头来没法在东西两方游刃有余,反而成了两头不着岸。但正因如此,他才发现他能完全地融入慈济。慈济是极少数,据我所知唯一把佛教现代化的佛教组织。上哪里找一位每天上互联网说法的女尼?上哪里找一家能把全球四十六个国度的分支联点通过互联网串联起来并同步诵经的佛教组织?我和何主任一样,对即传统即现代的慈济都没有水土不服的现象。
Secondly, he mentioned that he took 7 years to return to Tzu Chi to fulfill a promise he gave to Master. He was the very few, in fact the first couple, where Master official over his marriage. He found that after all the fame and glory, that is not the life that he wanted and after much persuasion by his wife, he returned to Tzu Chi. I feel that he is telling me that if a simple but fulfilling life is what you are looking for, do not waste years of life outside doing what you do not want, return to Tzu Chi once you got the chance.
其次何主任提到他用了七年时间履行向上人许下的承诺返回慈济。他是极少数,事实上第一对由上人主婚及祝福的夫妻。他发现名与利并不是他生活所追求的。经过妻子多番的劝导,他回到了慈济。我觉得何主任是在告诉我,如果向往一个简单却充实的生活,不要浪费生命在外奔波,要把握返回花莲慈济的机会。
After the talk, Victoria, Sarah and a Tzu Ching returned Mr Her to Stone SB and Yi Fang SG place. Everybody started chatting and in the end, nobody slept until 4 am. At 6 am, Sarah sent Mr Her to the airport where he continued his journey to LA.
茶会结束后,鈺梅、于嘉和一位慈请送何主任回返光伟师伯和宜芳师姑家安单。不过大家聊得起劲,直到凌晨四点方入睡,并在凌晨六点由于嘉送何主任到机场,续程到旧金山。
It was a fulfilling experience.
这是一个法喜充满的经验。
何主任的谈话很长,不过我很认同他开头讲的几段话,甚至认为何主任是在一对一地与我对话。
